Have had the problem in the past, didn't remember what I'd done to remedy, tried this and it didn't work and second time it did. The cause is a little leaf switch that is pushed over by the jack when you insert it. With headphones in, hit mute on and off, pulled out the headphones and I have speakers again! All my troubleshooting is done with the mouse or keyboard.
